Toward Brain-Actuated Mobile Platform

Abstract
This study presents a brain–computer interface (BCI) system aimed at providing disabled patients with mobile solutions for practical use.

The proposed system employs an omnidirectional chassis and a bionic robot arm to construct a multi-functional mobile platform. In addition, the system is equipped with a Kinect and 12 ultrasonic sensors to capture environment information. Based on artificial intelligence technology, the mobile system can understand the environment and smartly completes certain tasks.

A hybrid BCI combined with movement imagery paradigm and asynchronous P300 paradigm is designed to translate human intent to computer commands. The users interact with the system in a flexible way: on the one hand, the user issues commands to drive the system directly; on the other hand, the system searches for predefined operable targets and reports the results to the user.

Once the user confirms the target, the system will automatically complete the associated operation. To evaluate the system’s performance, a testing environment with a small room, aisle, and an elevator was built to simulate the mobile tasks in the daily scene.

Participants were instructed to operate the mobile system in the room, aisle, and using the elevator to go outdoors.

In this study, four subjects participated in the test, and all of them completed the task.

Towards a theory of digital media

Abstract

This article puts forward a theory of the role of digital media in social change. It begins by criticizing three theories that currently dominate our understanding of digital media and of media generally:

  • network theory,
  • mediatization theory and
  • actor-network theory.

It also identifies a gap in current communication theory, namely, that digital media mostly do not fit the divide into mass and interpersonal communication.

A further problem is that insufficient attention is given to the difference between political communication and popular culture or everyday life.

The article develops an alternative, focusing on four countries that provide a range of relationships between media and society; the U.S., Sweden, India and China. In all four countries, despite their differences, digital media, in contrast to traditional broadcast and interpersonal media, have led to a more differentiated media landscape.

Greater complexity in political communication nevertheless runs up against the continuing dominance of elite agenda-setting.

In terms of popular culture, all four countries have experienced a proliferation of media offerings and greater tetheredness between people. Hence, new divides are emerging between more active and variegated as against more passive and restricted media uses.

The article concludes with implications of digital media for understanding media generally: with new digital media, there is now a need to rethink media theory in terms of fundamental debates about how media transform or preserve the social order.

What happened to the border? The role of mobile information technology devices on employees’ work-life balance

Abstract

Purpose
Mobile information technology devices (MITDs) are of special interest for researchers who seek to understand the role of these devices on employees’ work-life balance (WLB). The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of MITDs on employees’ WLB.

Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses semi-structured interviews to investigate the role of MITDs on employees’ WLB.

Findings
The findings underscore the important role of MITDs in terms of the attainment of flexibility (how, where, and when work is done), which is significant for achieving WLB. However, the use of MITDs has blurred the division between work and non-work domains. This has inadvertently lengthened employees’ working hours, has affected their family relationships, and affected their general health and well-being. The evidence suggests that MITDs have the potential to improve WLB but could also lead to work-life conflict if not properly managed.

Originality/value
The study calls for a re-examination of WLB policies and practices, specifically border theory, in order to ensure that MITDs can enhance productivity without inadvertently resulting in poor WLB.
